Get the young adult support you need at CancerCare, a national nonprofit providing free support services to anyone affected by cancer. Young adult groups that are active include Living With Cancer, Life After Cancer, Young Women With Breast Cancer, Young Adult Grief Counseling and Young Adult Caregivers. For more information, hit the jump above or call 800-813-HOPE.
Support the young adult cancer movement and head on over to SeventyK and sign the young adult cancer patient bill of rights. For over three decades, there has been little to no progress in the survival rates and quality of life for cancer patients between 15-39 years old. This is not OK. By signing this bill, you are supporting it’s establishment as a standard of care to meet this underserved population.
First Descents programs are all about having fun, getting outside, and pushing your limits through kayaking, rock climbing and other outdoor activities. Our camps are structured and designed with you, the cancer warrior, in mind. There’s no need to have kayaking or climbing experience. We know your body has been through a lot – we don’t have any requirements for fitness. We encourage you to challenge yourself, but won’t push you past your capabilities. Our programs are free to all who are accepted. All you need to bring is what you’d typically pack for a trip. First Descents has all the gear and necessary equipment to keep you safe, warm and relatively dry. We’ll provide everything you need and teach you the skills, you just show up! Your week at camp will be full of activity but you’ll have plenty of time to relax too. When we’re not on the river or climbing, we hang out, hike, play volleyball, listen to music, etc. You’ll get to know the other participants well! Learn more at www.firstdescents.org
CAMP MAK-A-DREAM’s Young Adult Survivors Conference (YASC) is a unique, six-day educational program designed for individuals in all stages of survivorship, from diagnosis to long-term survivor. For participants in the midst of treatment, our on-site medical team is able to administer advanced treatment such as oral chemotherapy, IV antibiotics, blood transfusions, platelets and blood tests. YASC addresses issues of survivorship, provides information about being a cancer survivor, and builds bridges of support among young adult cancer survivors who may be experiencing similar journeys through life. Discussion topics may include navigating the health care system, advocacy, nutrition, exercise, relationships, employment and more. The goal of YASC is to create an environment in which participants gain the skills necessary to move on after experiencing cancer and to advocate for themselves and others.
YASC is also a recreational experience. In addition to workshops and discussions, participants can visit a local historical site or take part in other recreational activities. YASC participants come from all over the United States and Canada. They arrive ready for an educational experience aimed at sharing skills, knowledge and ideas, and return home equipped with new resources and support. Learn more here >>
